Player Piano
The upright grand player piano in the lobby is part of what makes Sandy Historical Museum such a fun and lively place. The piano was manufactured in 1908 by Lester Piano Company in Philadelphia and can be played electronically, manually, or by foot pedal. Sometimes high school students or other visitors drop in to treat the staff with their skills on the instrument. The piano is on loan from Ernie’s Piano Works in Estacada. Also on loan are 80 music rolls, which along with 32 rolls donated to the museum, include genres such as rock, country, and blues. Favorites are a 1901 rag jazz roll by the “King of Ragtime,” Scott Joplin, and the 1970s hit House of the Rising Sun. Children’s music includes Mother Goose nursery rhymes, lullabies, and Sunday school songs. Hawaiian, wedding music, Christmas, and other holiday songs and dances also fill the boxes of perforated rolls.
If you haven’t heard this grand instrument, just come in and ask for someone to turn it on for you.
