SMART COOPERATION CAN ACCOMPLISH A LOT
An example to show what can be accomplished when various jurisdictions in the
community work together, was the Bell Fields project.
To briefly summarize the situation, the Oregon Trail School District had land
scheduled for a ball field but no money in the budget to develop it. Meanwhile, the City
of Sandy had money in its Parks and Recreation fund but not enough to buy very much,
let alone develop it.
Sandy Mayor, Linda Malone, asked the School District if they would be willing to
work together on a project. They agreed, so, together with the Sandy Baseball Coach
Clark Hull, Athletic Director Rick Elsberry, Sandy Community Center Director Nancy
Enabnit, businesses and volunteers, the field was completed in July of 2001.
With all the donated labor and materials and by expediting the job, a first-class
field was completed at about one-third the projected cost.
Thus, the school district and community gained a great facility for tournaments in
the summer, late baseball games under lights, softball games in the spring and soccer
in the fall.
It was a win-win situation for everyone.
