Society extends invitation to share resources

Sandy Historical Society, Inc. in Sandy, OR (aka the Sandy Museum) would like to extend an invitation to homeschool groups, classrooms, study groups, and independent organizations to take advantage of our free museum tours and resources on local history. Partner up with us for free study materials, support, and educational opportunities. Your homeschool pod could take up the history of the Barlow Road and more than 100 years of logging, families, and businesses that built our area.

Our research library (aka Phil Jonsrud Library) provides onsite access to resources for historical writing or other projects. The library includes stories, books, maps, genealogy/family files, notebooks of information on many subjects of interest, photographs, illustrations, and other resources.

Local authors who have used the library for research include Dan Bosserman, who wrote the Sandy and Boring books for the Images of America series, and Bruce Haney, who wrote Eccentric Tales of Boring, Oregon. Their books are featured along with those of other authors in both the library and the gift shop on the ground floor. Another feature is a collection of non-fiction historical and trivia books by Rick Steber, recent winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards’ international grand prize.

We also have a “toy play area” upstairs including some vintage toys more suitable for younger children. We keep this space as a friendly location for little ones to play while the older kids and adults dig through artifacts and stories. Each child may also take a free book from the box of “Buddy Books” maintained by Friends of the Library.

We regularly display “mystery items” of the past, providing youth an opportunity to win a free hardback Whistle Punks and Misery Whips book for their home library. Also available are children’s free activity booklets with great historical information and artwork.

Give us a call to schedule a private tour or learning experience for your educational group! We are open to suggestions and partnering with your needs to better serve you and the community.

Sandy Historical Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays at 39345 Pioneer Blvd. Phone: 503-668-3378 Email: sandyhistorical@sandyhistory.com
